locate, settle

locate, settle
Each of these words is used to mean "to establish oneself, one's residence, or one's business in a place": "He located (or settled) in a small Western town." Settle is preferred when reference is to the residences, or living quarters, of people: "The soldiers settled into the fort quickly." "Government authorities will settle this area with newly arrived immigrants." Although locate is not incorrect in this meaning, it is considered less refined and more dialectal than settle. In other words, settle has the connotation of location, locate that of locality. See also locality.
